How To Make an Easy DIY Witch Cauldron for Halloween

DIY Witches Green Cauldron for Halloween

I am a huge Halloween fan and every year I tell myself that I don’t need to make anymore props or decorations. Famous last words LOL! But I always find an idea that I want to try so I can challenge myself and my creative DIY skills. This year one of the projects I decided to try my hand at were these textured green witches cauldrons from the dollar store. These were very easy and loads of fun. The best part is that they don’t have to look perfect or you don’t have to get the painting just right. You can play and paint and create a great creepy prop.

To create the gross chunky texture on the cauldrons we need a mix of oats, sand or dirt, white glue and I used some old bread crumbs because I had them in the cupboard. There isn’t a recipe that I could find, just mix together what you have to create a lumpy texture.

I poured in some Mod Podge but I quickly found that I needed a LOT of white glue. I used Mod Podge because I had it but you could also use any cheap white glue. I found that after trying to apply the mixture with the glue shown in the photo, I needed at least twice that much. I saturated the oat mix with a ton of white glue and made the mixture very creamy, for lack of a better word. The extra glue made a big difference to getting the oat mixture to stick to the cauldron.

This was way too dry! Load up on the white glue!

After struggling to get the pats to stick, I sprayed the cauldrons with this spray adhesive and it really helped because this stuff is VERY sticky.
Please note! do NOT spray this adhesive in the house. It is VERY very sticky adn adheres to everything. Use outside only and if you don’t like dirty hands, where gloves too.

This was the finally result of my oats and dirt mix. I let them sit overnight and the next day I brushed over another coat of white glue over the cauldron and mixture to really seal it in so it owuldn’t get water damaged and the squirrels wouldn’t eat the oats LOL! The oats are hard as a rock after that and didn’t fall off when I was painting the cauldron.
To watch me get the oat mixture on the cauldron please watch my YouTube video here.

These are the paint colours that I used to paint the cauldrons.

To watch me apply this very easy green paint please check out my YouTube video where I take you through all the steps of painting with the green acrylic paint, using the baby wipes to create streaks and to end with a brown water wash over the green paint. It really is easy and if I can do it, so can you :)

The final result :)

They both turned out great! I did apply a couple coats of matte clear coat because if the acrylic paint gets wet it will run and I don’t want the rain to ruin all my hard work.

Here is the larger cauldron in my fake foam fire pit that I created and dry brushed for this cauldron to sit in on my front lawn.
To see how I created this foam fire pit, you can watch my video here.

I hope you will give these spooky techniques a try! Lots of fun, easy and you don’t need expensive supplies.
Thanks for being here, Lisa :)
